their love story

modern beach wedding venue

They met at midnight on New Year’s Eve in Tulum, Mexico, at the bar at Bagatelle Tulum. Niki’s friends had too many margaritas, so she went to the bar to get them water, when Dean's best friend approached her at the bar. After a minute of talking, he asked for her number, and Dean stuck his phone in front of his friend’s phone and took over. From that moment on, we spent the night frolicking through the sand, dancing, and talking on a lounge chair until sunrise. Niki’s phone was broken, so her friends were stern with Dean about trusting him to get her home, which they now laugh about 3 years later (and mentioned in speeches at the rehearsal dinner). Niki, the next morning, tested positive for COVID. Dean insisted on seeing her in the lobby to say bye and waited for her in New York until she was able to return home. Niki was living in LA at the time for work, and the two soon moved in together after three months of being inseparable.

the destination: nobu los cabos

Our first trip together since we met was to Nobu Los Cabos, in March 2022, for Niki’s birthday, where we witnessed a beautiful aesthetic wedding. Dean actually ran up to the planners on site and asked for their card (they were House of Kirschner, the planners we ended up using). We looked at zero venues. We always knew that was the place we wanted to get married after vacationing there that one time. We felt the wedding we witnessed was a sign. We wanted our guests, most importantly, to feel our gratitude for being there. We knew a wedding in Cabo when all our friends and family were coming from New York, with limited direct flights, was a big ask. We wanted to make sure it was an unforgettable weekend and the guests felt appreciated, and like it was a vacation they would have planned for themselves. For example, Niki is a stylist, so she went the extra mile to hand-select sunglasses for each guest based on their personal style and face shape, which she placed one by one in terry cloth neutral amenity pouches. She also worked with House of Kirschner to curate welcome boxes in the signature Nobu bags and welcome amenities. We didn’t want to place our logo on every single item, so guests could use them over and over again, and it didn’t feel gimmicky and narcissistic. We also wanted to capture and share our aesthetic and personality through the weekend. As a couple and individuals, we are known to be the fun, lively, and stylish two, so we wanted to reciprocate that energy in the design.

the vision: architectural and modern

minimalist wedding ceremony ideas

The planning process was amazing! We loved working with planners like House of Kirschner, who understood our desire to be different and architectural. We knew after witnessing one of their weddings and following Mauricio Kirschner that our vision would not be brought to life with the everyday wedding planner. While it was sometimes difficult to communicate with language barriers, different time zones, Zoom calls, and only one in-person trip to their base in Mexico City, we created mood boards that included buildings, textures, interior design, and even our own apartment, which they later translated into several design proposals. We wanted planners who understood our minimal aesthetic and attention to detail. We wanted to emulate the minimalism of the space and play on textures such as stone and travertine throughout the weekend.

Our focus was on making it our own while sticking to and enhancing what was already at Nobu. For example, our reception was inspired by the entrance of Nobu, where we included large white arches throughout to enclose the space and make it feel lavish, yet on brand. Our chuppah, we really wanted to be different and not just some hanging flowers. Capri is one of our favorite destinations, so we wanted to create a chuppah that looked like the famous rocks in Capri. And the rocks uplit at the Nobu entrance, rather than traditional flower clusters.

The florist at HOK also curated our flowers based on what they represent; orchids at the ceremony, which represent purity, new beginnings, and harmony, and white aranthiums, which signify love, hospitality, passion, and abundance. The flowers stood up on the tables vertically in ceramic vases with ivory stone slabs under as centerpieces, making the tables feel modern but still romantic.

Niki was a vision in a sheer crystal-beaded mermaid gown. Later that night, she made the switch to an adorable mini dress and the hottest crystal-beaded thigh-high boots we've ever seen! Her bridesmaids wore beachy champagne dresses in a mix of satin and sequins. Dean was a dashing groom in a white dinner jacket and loafers.

One part of the wedding that the guests still talk about to this day was our travertine table seating cards, which were real stone with every guest/couple's name engraved in script, which many guests proudly took home as decor for their homes. The menus were also engraved in stone with classic chic signature cocktails such as “le haute tini”, a bleu cheese olive martini, and the “old fashioned mr glas”, which was a Nobu spin on the Old Fashioned. The food was all hand-picked from Nobu, including catered kosher options for the guests who observe.

freddie mercury queen cover band in los cabos

Another element was a tribute to the couple's favorite band, Queen. They found a Freddy Mercury doppelgänger performer based in Mexico who did a live set. This happened at the end of the meal and started with the signature “ayyyy yo”, which was a surprise and a cue to guests to return to the dance floor. We also took many lessons for our first dance together, and we wanted to replicate the famous Dirty Dancing lift, which we did! It was an iconic, memorable moment.
