Perfect pastel wedding with a welcome sign that doubled as a photo op
William and Mary’s close friend Lura thought the two would be a perfect match — and, as the couple later noted, “She was right!” From the start, Mary felt an immediate ease around William, drawn to his politeness, gentleness, and quiet strength. William, in turn, was struck not only by Mary’s beauty but also by her thoughtfulness and eloquence. “It was the combination of beauty and brains that immediately caught my attention,” he recalled. The couple were engaged at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida when William proposed as they walked the grounds after dinner. Through their thoughtful use of color, William and Mary honored their Chinese-American heritage at their wedding hosted at Newport Beach House, embracing the vibrant, festive spirit central to Chinese celebrations. Captured by Hedi Field, their wedding was perfectly pink, perfectly pastel, and incorporated the most perfect, delicate gold details.
The couple's goal: sophisticated whimsy
“Our goal was to create an atmosphere that felt fun and whimsical, yet sophisticated and refined, all while paying homage to the coastal setting,” the couple explained.

The details: ocean-inspired elements
Ocean-inspired elements — oyster shells, hand-painted whimsical menus, and a continuous shade of soft blue — tied the theme together.
Incorporating Chinese tradition: qipao
For the reception, Mary changed into a qipao, hand-selected by her mother and custom-sewn in China, featuring delicate embroidery and symbols of devotion and eternal love. She explained, “That detail, in particular, felt like a beautiful way to honor both tradition and family.”
Bringing family voices into the day
Both Mary and William’s fathers gave speeches, translated into English by William’s sister — a poignant way to bridge cultures and share their families’ voices with everyone present. “It was a feeling of love, gratitude, and completeness that I’ll always remember,” William reflected. “The wedding reminded us of all the good in our lives,” Mary added, a sentiment that carried through their planning and celebration of love.
