their love story
Zayla and Joel first met during their university years, but love bloomed long after. Their story unfolded beautifully, culminating in an unforgettable destination wedding on the shores of Mexico at the stunning Villa La Joya—a venue Zayla "just knew was the one" (possibly thanks to Pinterest!). Joel’s proposal was as thoughtful as it was picturesque: under a historic bridge in Winnipeg with a hidden photographer capturing every second, followed by a surprise celebration with their nearest and dearest.
the vision: playful sophistication
Perfectly planned and orchestrated by Mango Weddings & Events, the ceremony focused on intimacy, love, and authenticity. With live guitar music, prosecco for guests, and a layout that brought everyone together, it was more than a ceremony—it was a shared experience. They broke with tradition by forgoing a standing wedding party and instead allowed all guests to be seated as equals. Both walked down the aisle with their parents, creating deeply emotional and symbolic moments. Their handwritten vows, exchanged in front of the ocean and loved ones, made the moment unforgettable.
The reception was a joyful blend of chic sophistication and playful color. With mariachi music to welcome guests, vibrant florals by Priola, and a bold dress code of “formal & festive,” the night struck the perfect balance of elegance and energy. From a lively lounge setup for adults and kids alike to impeccable cuisine by Gourmet Soberanis—no glass went empty and no guest stopped dancing. The experience was just as much a celebration of their love as it was a tribute to the people who shaped their journey.
the invitations
A playful assortment of color and font choices, the signage and invitation suite were an experience all their own. When choosing your own invitations, don't be afraid to let your vendors get creative with colors and textures.
getting ready
Clad in a satin robe and feathered slippers, the bride sipped champagne as she waited for her besties to arrive at the bridal suite. There, she surprised them with adorable matching flamingo pajamas and fluffy pink slippers! The groom was all smiles that morning, too, as his mom helped him put the finishing touches on his look.
the fashion
Zayla stunned in a modern, elegant gown by Chosen by KYHA—a dress that felt completely “her.” Joel brought classic style with a James Bond-inspired custom tux: a sharp off-white dinner jacket, black pants, and bowtie. Together, they exuded timeless glamour with a modern edge.
a first look with dad
We've said it once, we'll say it again. There is nothing better than a first look with your parents! It's an absolute must, even if it means investing in a second shooter for the day. Just look at the pride and excitement—this only happens once in a lifetime.
the cake
In lieu of a traditional tiered wedding cake, the couple opted for a simple buttercream-frosted cake with pressed flower decorations. We're seeing more and more couples ditch the big cake for a plated dessert and saving the cake moment just for themselves.
words of wisdom from the happy couple
Though their planning journey began with some bumps—an inexperienced planner caused early challenges—everything shifted when Zayla and Joel brought on Mango Weddings. “It was the single best decision we made,” Zayla shared. “It turned everything around and made the experience enjoyable again. We now tell every couple: Do your research, read the reviews, and hire a planner you trust. Planning a destination wedding is an adventure, and having the right support makes it truly enjoyable." They also recommend couples take time to create a peaceful, stress-free getting-ready morning—and consider hosting the wedding off-resort to make it feel like a truly special occasion within the trip.
