Rethinking the neutral wedding: black, white, & brown rooftop soirée
It seems, these days, that couples are going one of two ways with their color palette, vibrant or monochromatic, until today we had yet to see anything in between, and we're obsessed! Don't be fooled by the cool checkerboard floor; this wedding had a surprising pop of brown, and it served as a great reminder that neutrals come in more shades than just black and white. their love story
"We were close friends before we started dating, so we both knew we could make each other laugh and just be ourselves," said Leslie and Colton, who first met in high school. They had mutual crushes for a while, so when they finally made their relationship official, they were already comfortable with one another. After graduation, they attended the same college, continuing to build their life together. In December 2023, after seven years of dating, Colton planned a romantic proposal under the twinkling Christmas lights of Highland Park, Texas. He surprised Leslie with a horse-drawn carriage ride, but in a twist of fate - or perhaps perfect timing - the horse broke down beneath a gazebo. Seizing the moment, Colton got down on one knee and proposed. “Truly the most magical night ever!” Leslie recalls.
the vision: black and white rooftop soirée
Inspired by Leslie's parents' 80s wedding, Leslie and Colton chose to forgo a traditional sit-down reception in favor of a lounge atmosphere with a bar and endless hors d'oeuvres. This setup encouraged guests to mingle while infusing the day with a "timeless cosmopolitan" style. The faith-based ceremony on the rooftop, officiated by Leslie’s uncle, included scripture and prayer. The programs featured a detailed map of the venue, 400 North Ervay, highlighting activity stations such as an ice cream sandwich station and sketch artists. Designed by Sweet Pea Events, satin tablecloths, lush floral arrangements by Venus & Co Flowers, candles, and a fully checkered rooftop floor brought a modern touch to the unmistakable setting.
the invitations
With a hint of art deco and some sporty font choices, we love the invitation suite Paradise Design Co. dreamed up for these two. And note the subtle hints of brown, bronze, and gold throughout–see what they did there...
the fashion
Leslie wore three stunning dresses throughout the day: a sleek satin gown, a sequined party dress, and a lace mini-dress to cap off the night.
Her bridesmaids rocked the brown from the palette in a mix of satin and velvet dresses that they will totally wear again! Colton looked equally dapper in a timeless black tuxedo, and his groomsmen followed suit.
live artists
An artist painted the ceremony live, and another sketch artist provided guest portraits as an interactive wedding favor. Keep this trend coming, we seriously can't get enough! And is it just us, or do the artists keep getting better and better?
the cake
The adorable four-tiered cake had a nod to the present and the past with the Lambeth buttercream decor and cheeky topper, and pop art-inspired cherries.
a private last dance
After a lively party atmosphere and late-night snacks, the couple shared a private dance under the stars before exiting through cheers by family and friends to a vintage car getaway.
